Mentor Journal Entry 2

The second session with our students is complete.  Did anything interesting happen in your group discussion today?  Were there any topics worth sharing with your fellow mentors?  Or perhaps you have some general thoughts on how the sessions are progressing and developing?

  1. The last session with my students went quite well. Unfortunately, not all of them came to the meeting, but the smaller group size really facilitated the discussion and gave everyone equal opportunity to participate. We played a small game where each person pulled one item from their backpack or pockets and related that item to their personality. They also shared how those traits could be considered strengths and/or weaknesses. It was a simple game, but it made for great conversation. A challenge with this group will be to continue encouraging them to pursue their academic and professional dreams while also realizing the numerous options available to them. I hope they have found our conversations to be both beneficial and fun.

  2. I had a very interesting discussion with my students about diversity (a discussion the students themselves began), and was able to relay some information I had learned in class to them. We discussed particularly why most scholarships are geared toward minority students and why this is particularly important in healthcare. I have a very diverse group of students and all of the students had something intelligent to say concerning the issue. I hope to work on more tangible concerns during the next session. Hopefully we can look at some SAT resources, possible scholarships they can apply for, and application processes online.

  3. In today's mentoring session we talked a lot about decisions related to college. My students all had a general idea on which schools that they wanted to apply to and eventually attend. I encouraged them to consider why they had selected certain schools and different ideas on what they need in a college. For the most part the students had questions about college life and about college applications. We discussed what makes a good college essay and the important things to leave out and to include in their application. Overall I believe that today's session went really well. I am encouraged by the fact that my students all have goals and are seeking out ways to achieve them. As most of my students are juniors they have time to improve their applications and make themselves even more competitive.
